The SMI facility will utilise the technology and regulatory approval of SMI technology providers to lead the immune cell and stem cell therapy options, compliant with Japanese regulations. Japanese regulations concerning cellular therapies are more robust than those of other countries such as Indonesia and Australia, with a strong focus on the quality of patient care and safety.

Regenerative Medicine

Regenerative medicine is changing the way medicine is practiced. It is projected that the regenerative medicine market will grow beyond $150 billion by 2026.

Regenerative medicine, stem cells and cell therapies continue to gain worldwide recognition as governments commit to funding research, and attempt to expand access to this technology. In the past controversial, these treatments are now becoming one of medicine's most exciting opportunities.

Immune Cell Therapy

Immune cell therapy is a type of regenerative medicine, which involves the enhancement of immune cells that can fight cancer. Specifically, immune cells are collected from a patient's blood, modified in a laboratory to enhance their cancer-fighting abilities, including multiplication in a culture medium, and then infused back into the patient. These enhanced cells are empowered to recognize and attack cancer cells, providing a powerful approach to cancer treatment.

Stem Cell Therapy

Stem cell therapy is another form of regenerative medicine that involves the use stem cells to regenerate damaged or diseased tissues. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), in particular, have the potential to divide and develop into limited but specific types of specialized cells, such as muscle, bone, and nerve cells. It is more widely accepted now that the regenerative power of MSCs is due to their immune-modulating and growth/repair promoting secreations, including exosomes. They can be safely obtained from different sources, such as bone marrow, adipose tissue, and other adult tissues including dental pulp. These cells have the potential to repair or replace damaged cells or tissues.

Facility
Capab-ilities

Stem Cell Medicine & Cell Banking The SMI Facility will be one of the very few clinical environments offering advanced same day and culture expanded autologous cell therapy options, with a cGMP (Current Good Manufacturing Practice) laboratory on-site. Furthermore, cryo-preservation of cells in a cell banking facility will make possible patient repeat dosing upon return visits. This allows for the treatment of acute injuries, degenerative disorders, pain and suffering, and even the ability to stave off the effects of ageing. Your own stem cells, harvested, expanded, injected intravenously, in to joints, muscle, soft tissue, stored, and made available whenever needed. Our facility is the medical environment of the future, capable of impacting people’s lives today and tomorrow.

Wound Care Management Regenerative medicine approaches can be used extensively for all types of difficult to heal wounds. From closure of non-healing wounds due to diabetic ulcers, through to treating sores of immobility in the elderly, the SMI Facility will be able to utilise the latest regenerative medicine approaches including autologous platelet therapy, stem cells and even hyperbaric technology. Our expert partners from Australia, Japan, Holland, and the US bring decades of experience to solving wound healing issues for patients that many clinical environments are unfortunately failing at.

Sports Medicine & Interventional Orthopaedics Injuries due to sports and general activity can lead to chronic pain and limitation to general movement. In the athlete this can be career ending. For the average person it may impact their earning potential, family relationships, and an ability to maintain independence. Constraints on joint function due to degenerative osteoarthritis (OA) is known as a leading cause for pain and disability. Whether acute injury or tissue degeneration over time, both can be successfully treated with stem cells and other regenerative techniques. Same day procedures as well as more long-term treatment plan options will allow patients to move better, live easier, and do more as a result of the extraordinary healing properties of stem cells on the musculoskeletal system. Significantly delaying or even out right avoidance of joint replacement surgery in a minimally invasive manner is fast becoming the preferred treatment option - and the SMI Facility will make this an accessible possibility for those in need.

Neuro-modulation & Rehabilitation Our understanding of what it takes to recover from brain injuries due to head trauma (eg. TBI, concussion, and post-concussion syndrome) or cerebrovascular insult (eg. stroke), and prevent or slow the progression of neuro-cognitive decline (eg. dementia, Parkinson’s disease) has advanced considerably in recent years. Utilising the latest neuro-modulatory technologies such as transcranial magnetic stimulation, hyperbaric oxygen and photobiomodulation, together with advanced mapping of the brain’s connectome and function, has made possible a much more predictive approach to restoring and maintaining a healthy nervous system. The possibility of combining these strategies with the healing powers of regenerative medicine will make the SMI Facility unique and highly sought after.

Ophthalmology & Vision Care Our eyes, and the ability to see, is a sense most people hold most dear. And the loss of which many of us can’t even begin to imagine. The unfortunate truth is, however, that thousands of people suffer significant vision impairment and loss of sight unnecessarily. Expertise in eye care will be, other than cell therapies and neuro-rehab, a cornerstone offering at the SMI Facility. We are partnering the award winning not-for-profit Sight For All to expand our commitment to make a difference beyond Sanur and, together with the much loved Australian ophthalmologist Dr James Muecke, are set to have a big impact on Indonesian’s ability to see and interact with the world.

Scientific Wellness Solutions & Longevity Medicine At the SMI Facility, our team of scientific and clinical advisors and practitioners will be committed to providing for our patients the latest, most advanced, and clinically validated options for recovery, health and vitality. This may include intravenous nutrient therapy, hyperbaric oxygen, photobiomodulation, cryo-therapy, nutrition coaching, guidance on supplementation, movement coaching including strength and balance training, and education on strategies to add years to your life and life to your years. These modalities can be employed to augment the more advanced regenerative medical approaches, and/or utilised purely for functional prowess, longevity purposes and healthy ageing. As they say, prevention is better than cure. But if it’s a cure patients are seeking, then chances are the SMI Facility can contribute a long way towards that outcome!

Immune Cell Therapy for Cancer As one of the leading causes of death in both developed and developing countries, cancer causes much pain and suffering for individuals and their loved ones. Being able to provide advanced adjunctive treatment in the form of ICT for cancer patients by experienced experts in a trusted and highly credible clinical environment will make a difference to many thousands of families. For many throughout the world, immune cell therapy has either simply not been available and/or financially inaccessible. The SMI Facility will make possible safe, efficacious and affordable treatment options that can be successfully administered either stand alone or together with more conventional approaches.

Oral & Maxillofacial Health Complex oral, jaw and facial pain can result in extreme suffering. And certain neuropathic pain conditions are capable of extending beyond sites of origin to other areas of high sensitivity such as hands and fingertips. The outcomes are often beyond debilitating and can in many situations lead to unfortunate loss of life. Working together with leading experts in regenerative specialist maxillofacial surgery, the SMI Facility will be capable of offering life-changing, and life-saving, treatment options. Patients can once again live full, productive and enjoyable lives.

Gastroenterology & Digestive Diseases Through the Simplr Network of scientific and clinical expertise, the SMI Facility will be capable of delivering on advanced treatment options to heal the gut and GI system. From the use of stem cells to modulate the hyper-active immune responses in chronic inflammatory bowel disorders, to fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) for the treatment of Crohn’s Disease and auto-immunity, regenerating healthy gut function is pivotal in recovery, healthy ageing and optimal human performance. Microbiome analyses and resultant corrective strategies is a diagnostic and treatment approach that is proving to be most impactful in patients able to access these advancements.

Metabolic & Nutritional Medicine Foundational to health, healthy ageing, and the ability to recover from disease and disability is nutrition and an optimally functioning metabolism. Preventing and reversing type 2 diabetes, staving off cardiovascular disease, treating issues of chronic inflammation, and even impacting the global obesity epidemic, all starts with what we eat. Our team of highly trained and experienced nutritionists, nutrition scientists, and medical experts who have a deep understanding of food as medicine, can help educate, coach and guide patients through the complex interplay of diet, supplementation and disease reversal towards a state of optimal wellbeing. Ensuring states of chronic inflammation are sufficiently addressed via specific nutritional strategies helps to optimise the success of our regenerative medicine approaches, leading to best possible patient outcomes.

Point of care diagnostics & Epidemic preparedness The recent pandemic proved to the world the importance of accurate, rapid and meaningful diagnostics. Having a laboratory facility that can not only fulfil many basic pathology requirements on-site, but also cater to cancer diagnostics and the detection of infectious diseases, better prepares the SMI Facility to make available cost-effective assessment but also protection to our most immune compromised and therefore vulnerable patients. Our relationship with leading diagnostics biotech companies and infectious disease experts positions us well to powerfully and accurately assess patient wellbeing and keep them safe. Genomic analysis will give our practitioners a clearer understanding of treatment pathways, and predictive powers to best optimise results.
